Yesterday evening (1 March 2025), Patti Smith graced Bottega Veneta's fashion week event in Milan with her captivating presence. This special event, titled 'Correspondences', was curated by Smith and Soundwalk Collective, a contemporary sonic arts platform founded by Stephan Crasneanscki and Simone Merli.

The performance took place at Bottega Veneta's new headquarters within Palazzo San Fedele. The event maintained the brand's presence at Milan Fashion Week ahead of Louise Trotter's debut show in September.

Trotter, announced as the new creative director of Bottega Veneta at the end of 2024, arrives at the iconic Italian fashion house after Matthieu Blazy's move to Chanel. Trotter comes armed with a pragmatic design language developed during her tenures at Joseph and Lacoste.

The performance included a poem by Smith about Carlo Mollino, an Italian architect who passed away in 1973. Mollino, known for designing iconic buildings like the Casa del Sole in Cervinia and the Teatro Regio in Turin, also had a secret apartment filled with erotic Polaroids of sex workers, discovered after his death.

Bottega Veneta artisans recreated butterflies, a symbolic motif from Mollino's apartment, in the HQ's entranceway. These Polaroids were later exhibited at Gagosian and Kunsthalle Vienna.

Smith ended the event with an a cappella rendition of 'Because the Night', dedicated to her late husband Fred 'Sonic' Smith, who passed away in 1994 from heart failure. It was Smith's bandmate Lenny Kay who introduced her to Fred Smith in 1976.

All eyes will be on Milan in September to see Trotter's vision for Bottega Veneta unfold. The luxury sphere is eagerly anticipating the shift marked by Trotter's rare appointment as a female creative director of a major house.

The collaborators for this event include the late Jean-Luc Godard, choreographer Sasha Waltz, and Nan Goldin. The event by Bottega Veneta, related to the artist Patti Smith and the Contemporary Sonic Arts Platform of Soundwalk Collective, was a memorable highlight of Milan Fashion Week 2025.

Daniel Lee brought about a creative (and commercial) renaissance at Bottega Veneta in 2018, designing under Blazy until taking up the mantle of creative director in 2022. With Trotter at the helm, the future of Bottega Veneta promises an exciting new chapter.
