The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in China has revealed the Kia EV5, the automaker's first China-made global electric vehicle. The announcement was made on August 14, and the EV5 will officially launch on August 25 at the Chengdu Motor Show.

The Kia EV5 is built on an 800V E-GMP platform, equipped with a MacPherson strut suspension for a smooth ride. The electric SUV boasts a curb weight of 1870 kg and a maximum speed limited to 185 km/h.

The Kia-Yueda joint venture, which will produce the EV5 in their Yancheng plant in China, will aim to sell 180,000 EVs annually by 2030 in China. The EV5 will be the first China-made global EV by the Kia-Yueda JV.

The Kia EV5 will feature an LFP Blade battery from BYD, a battery manufacturer wholly owned by FinDreams, and a 160 kW electric motor with 310 Nm peak torque. The exact size of the EV5 produced in China and marketed in the second half of the year is not specified.

The Kia EV5 will be available for presale in November, and it will be sold domestically and exported. Interestingly, the Chinese version of the Kia EV5 will have an LFP battery, while the overseas version is reported to have an 82 kWh NMC battery.

Kia plans to unveil at least one E-GMP-based electric vehicle every year to reach 6 EV models on the market by 2027. In the second half of the year, Kia will launch two new EVs in China - the EV5 and the more expensive EV6 coupe. However, no information about the price or production details of the EV6 coupe was provided.

The EV5 concept was unveiled at the Kia China New Energy Strategy Conference in March. The MIIT homologation submission reveals that the Kia EV5 has dimensions (L/W/H) 4615/1875/1715mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2750mm.

With the launch of the Kia EV5, the automaker is demonstrating its commitment to the Chinese market and its ambition to lead the electric vehicle revolution. The Kia EV5 is set to hit the roads in China and beyond, offering a sustainable and enjoyable driving experience.
