Beijing Auto 007 SUV: Potential Export to Left-Hand Drive Countries
Investigation
Recent reports suggest that Beijing Automotive Group (BAIC) may be planning to export the Beijing Auto 007 SUV to countries where they drive on the left side of the road, such as England.
The car in a recently released picture, believed to be the BAW (Beijing Auto Works) 007 SUV, shows a modern front design and a BAW logo. However, the steering wheel in the picture is on the right side, which is unusual for Chinese vehicles, and it is speculated that it could be mirrored in the image.
While official export plans for the Beijing Auto 007 are yet to be announced, it is plausible that BAIC, like other Chinese manufacturers, is preparing new models for export markets as the domestic market situation allows.
If the Beijing Auto 007 is indeed designed for left-hand drive countries, potential markets could include the UK, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. The UK market, while important, still has limited penetration by Chinese SUV brands. Japan, on the other hand, is a home market with potential for affordable electric SUVs.
BAIC has already made significant strides in South Africa, a country with left-hand drive, particularly with SUVs and electric vehicles. Given BAIC's presence in South Africa, an export of the Beijing Auto 007 to this market would be plausible.
Other potential markets with left-hand drive include Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Southeast Asia. However, these markets are often dominated by local production and other manufacturers.
While the Beijing Auto 007 is part of the BAIC model lineup in China, official export announcements for this model are currently not public. However, given BAIC's strategic focus on international markets, it is likely that the Beijing Auto 007 could be a part of their future export portfolio.
In related news, BAIC's subsidiary, Beijing Motor, is working on the Arcfox Alpha S5 coupe, and spy photos of its interior have been exposed. Additionally, there are rumours that BAIC may show two concept cars based on the Saab 9-3 and (old) 9-5 platforms, which they bought from GM before Spyker.
The BAIC BJ60, another SUV launched in China, comes with a 4WD, 267 HP, and a starting price of 33,500 USD. The new BAIC Beijing BJ30 SUV version has also been spotted on the road.
