The attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, was a significant event that shook the nation. Here's a timeline of key developments and controversies related to the incident.

On that fateful day, several offices within the Capitol were devastated during the attack. The violence resulted in around 140 police officers being injured. The attack occurred after Trump's false claim of election fraud in November 2020.

Following the attack, the House of Representatives initiated an impeachment procedure against Trump for "incitement to insurrection". However, in the Senate, a conviction of Trump for "incitement to insurrection" was not reached with the required two-thirds majority.

In December 2022, the Democrats' investigative committee recommended that Trump be charged with "incitement to overthrow". This recommendation was made in the context of the Committee's ongoing investigation into the Capitol attack.

Trump continued to falsely claim that he won the 2020 presidential election, a claim that has been widely debunked. Despite this, he pardoned more than 1500 Capitol attackers after his return to the White House.

In a twist of events, the special counsel Jack Smith discontinued the proceedings against Trump after his election victory on November 5, 2024. Smith explained in his report that only Trump's election victory had saved him from a conviction.

The new U.S. President is Joe Biden. In response to the attack, the House of Representatives has formed a new subcommittee with eight members, three of whom are Democratic Party members. The chairman of the subcommittee is Republican representative Barry Loudermilk from Georgia, a staunch Trump supporter.

The subcommittee's final report is expected to be released in December 2025. According to the latest updates, the final report from the subcommittee is expected to be published by December 2026.

Trump has launched a reinterpretation of the events of the Capitol attack, referring to January 6, 2021 as a "day of love". It remains to be seen how the subcommittee's findings will influence public perception of the events that transpired on that day.
