In a nail-biting finish, Rory McIlroy secured his second Amgen Irish Open title at the Ballyliffin Golf Club in County Donegal. The Northern Irish golfer triumphed over Joakim Lagergren in a dramatic three-hole playoff.

McIlroy started the final round a shot behind Adrien Saddier, but a brilliant 66 saw him finish the tournament with a score of 17-under-par 271. Saddier, however, struggled in the final round, eventually ending in a tie for fifth place.

As the day progressed, it was Angel Hidalgo who looked set to challenge McIlroy for the title. Hidalgo shot a 67 in the final round, leaving him in tied-third alongside Rafa Cabrera Bello.

Meanwhile, Lagergren, ranked 1,194th in the world, seemed to take the lead in the final round with an eagle on the 16th hole. His eagle putt from eight feet was a confident stroke, but it was McIlroy who responded with an equally impressive eagle of his own, thanks to a 5-wood approach that landed just three feet from the hole.

The final hole of regulation play saw both McIlroy and Lagergren requiring eagles to force a playoff. McIlroy's approach shot finished 27 feet below the hole, while Lagergren's birdie putt narrowly missed, leaving the door open for McIlroy to force extra holes.

The sudden-death playoff began on the 18th hole, where both McIlroy and Lagergren made birdies, halving the hole. The second playoff hole saw another exchange of birdies, with both players showing remarkable resilience.

The decisive moment came in the third playoff hole. McIlroy's drive was pushed into the rough, but his approach shot found the green. Lagergren's approach, however, was pulled and went into a hazard, effectively ending the contest.

McIlroy's victory in the 2023 Irish Open adds to his legendary career, completing the Grand Slam in a year where he also won the Masters, Pebble Beach, and The Players. His caddie at the Irish Open was Harry Diamond.

The 2023 Irish Open will be remembered as a thrilling contest, with McIlroy demonstrating his class under pressure to secure his second Irish Open title.
