Island's historic church stages 13th annual religious service on Akdamar
In the picturesque setting of Akdamar Island in Lake Van, Turkey, the 13th annual divine liturgy was held on September 7. Hundreds of worshippers gathered for the event, which has become a symbol of cultural dialogue and religious heritage.
The Akdamar Church, a significant piece of medieval Armenian architecture, underwent a major restoration in 2005 and was inaugurated as a memorial museum in 2007. Special permission from the ministry allowed the church to open for worship once a year, starting from 2010.
This year's liturgy was presided over by Patriarch Sahak Mashalian of the Armenian Patriarchate of Turkey. He was accompanied by his deputy Father Kaspar Garabetyan and Bishop Hovagim Manukyan, the spiritual leader of Armenians in the United Kingdom.
Gevaş district's Akdamar Pier was bustling with activity as early as 8 a.m., with worshippers arriving to attend the liturgy. Heightened security measures were in place for the event, and attendees were subject to checks before being ferried to the island by boat. City authorities arranged additional sea bus services to accommodate the crowds.
Anjel Yanıkbaca, a visitor from Istanbul, expressed appreciation for the opportunity to attend the liturgy and for the excellent organization. He stated that visiting the Akdamar Church was a long-held wish for the faithful. Yanıkbaca was impressed by the place and expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to the event.
The faithful lit candles, prayed, and chanted hymns during the service. Patriarch Mashalian expressed his joy at the continuation of their annual liturgical tradition. The liturgy was attended by a large congregation of clergy from the Armenian Patriarchate of Turkey and visitors from across Turkey and abroad.
Preparations on the island began days in advance to ensure the smooth running of the annual liturgy. The first liturgy in 95 years was celebrated on the island in 2010. The Akdamar Church has since become a beacon of cultural exchange and a testament to the rich history of Armenian architecture.
As the sun set over Lake Van, the island returned to its peaceful state, carrying with it the echoes of the prayers and hymns that filled the air during the liturgy. The 2025 gathering will mark the 13th such occasion, a tradition that continues to unite the faithful and celebrate the cultural and religious heritage of Turkey.
