Israel allegedly attempts to eliminate Al-Qassam Brigades' spokesperson Abu Ubaida in airstrike targeted at Gaza
The Israeli army has launched Operation Gideon 2, an offensive aimed at occupying Gaza City, as confirmed by Defense Minister Israel Katz on Aug. 21. The operation, which began two weeks ago in the Zeitoun neighborhood with large-scale attacks, has resulted in significant casualties and raised concerns about civilian safety.
According to reports from Israel-based Channel 12, the Israeli military targeted Abu Obeida, the spokesman for Hamas' Al-Qassam Brigades, in Gaza City. However, the Israeli military statement only confirmed that an airstrike targeted a "key" Hamas member without confirming Abu Obeida's death. The real name of the allegedly killed spokesperson is Hudahaifa Kahlout, also known as Abu Obeida.
The attack on Abu Obeida's residence in the al-Rimal neighborhood in western Gaza City has resulted in seven deaths and injuries to others. Witnesses stated that the building was inhabited, with most of its residents being women, children, and displaced civilians. Further details about Abu Obeida were not provided in the statement.
The assault on Gaza has escalated tensions in the region, with the enclave now facing the threat of famine. This is not the first time Israel's military campaign in Gaza has caused widespread devastation and loss of life. Since October 2023, Israel's military campaign in Gaza has killed nearly 63,400 Palestinians, according to officials.
The International Criminal Court has taken notice of Israel's actions in Gaza. In November, the Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel now faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its war on the enclave.
As the operation continues, the international community is watching closely, calling for an end to the violence and a commitment to protecting civilian lives. The situation in Gaza remains volatile, and it is hoped that a peaceful resolution can be found to end the suffering of the Palestinian people.
