In a recent development, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has accused the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) of a severe attack on its peacekeepers in South Lebanon. This incident, which is said to be one of the most serious since the November 2020 ceasefire agreement, has sparked international condemnation and raised concerns about the ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.

The alleged attack occurred while UNIFIL workers were removing roadblocks that obstructed access to a UN position. According to UNIFIL, the Israeli forces, previously informed about the planned work near the Lebanese border south of the village of Marwahin, reportedly conducted a drone attack near the peacekeepers at the location and time in question.

Israel's army, however, denies any intention of targeting the peacekeepers. Soldiers are said to have used several flashbangs to repel a potential threat, but the UN workers were not intentionally shot at.

The UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, established in 1978 to serve as a buffer between Israel and Lebanon, comprises over 10,800 soldiers and civilians. The mission has been stationed in Lebanon for decades, playing a crucial role in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

The incident has not been the first time Israel has been accused of attacking UNIFIL personnel or property. The mandate of the UN peacekeeping force was significantly expanded after the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel, reflecting the ongoing security challenges in the region.

The 2006 war, which was resolved with UN Security Council resolution 1701, saw thousands of people displaced on both sides of the border. Since then, Hezbollah has intensified rocket fire on Israel, with the militia reportedly doing so immediately after the start of the Gaza war in October 2023.

Israel regularly attacks Hezbollah targets, accusing the militia of continuing military activity in the border area. The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon ended in November 2024, and tensions have been escalating ever since.

France has condemned the incident, with the French foreign ministry stating that the UN mission must be able to fully exercise its mandate and enjoy freedom of movement. The UN Security Council in New York has yet to issue a statement on the matter, but it is expected to discuss the incident in the coming days.

The end of the UN peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon is scheduled for the end of 2026, raising questions about the future of the region and the ability of local forces to maintain peace and stability. As the situation continues to evolve, the international community will be closely monitoring developments in the region and working towards a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
