In North Rhine-Westphalia, the latest statistics show an increase in unemployment, with youth unemployment also on the rise. According to the Federal Employment Agency, the unemployment rate in the region has risen by 4.3 percent, reaching 8.0 percent as of the latest statistics.

The data used by the Federal Employment Agency was collected up to August 13, and the agency's head office is located in Düsseldorf, the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. The increase in unemployment occurred for the first time since April 2010, and it is primarily due to short-term seasonal factors.

However, the head of the NRW Regional Directorate, Roland Schuessler, warns that the longer-term development on the labor market in North Rhine-Westphalia must be closely monitored. He anticipates a decrease in unemployment in the coming months, but the continuing challenging economic situation is making companies hesitant to hire new workers.

Many young people in North Rhine-Westphalia have registered as unemployed after completing their training for a transitional period. The number of unemployed young people in North Rhine-Westphalia is not explicitly stated in the recent reports, but overall unemployment in NRW is above 800,000 as of August 2025. About 58,000 unemployed are registered specifically in the Cologne agency area, which reflects a part of NRW.

Despite the rise in unemployment, there are signs of hope. Many personnel departments in North Rhine-Westphalia are planning to conduct selection interviews, which will lead to further hiring. Many employees in North Rhine-Westphalia are expected to start their previously agreed new jobs from September 1.

The unemployment rate a year ago was 7.7 percent, so while the current situation is challenging, it is not as dire as it was a year ago. The head of the NRW Regional Directorate, Roland Schuessler, remains optimistic and is hopeful that the unemployment rate will decrease in the coming months.
