"Joe Biden Marks Largest White House Diwali Celebration in History"
On Monday, October 25, 2022, the White House hosted the largest Diwali reception in its history. United States President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden welcomed a diverse gathering of Indian Americans from the Biden administration, members of the most diverse Administration in American history, and members of the South Asian American community.
President Biden began his speech by expressing gratitude for the South Asian American community, thanking them for making Diwali a wonderful part of American society. He stated that Diwali represents the triumph of good over evil, a reminder that each person has the power to bring light to the world, whether in America or around the world.
Biden highlighted the significance of Diwali, a festival that commemorates the homecoming of Lord Rama after 14 years in exile and his victory over Ravana. He also acknowledged the importance of worshipping Lord Ganesha and Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, in North India, signifying the welcoming of prosperity and wealth.
First Lady Jill Biden praised the Eastern American community in the US for "helping us light our way ahead." She expressed gratitude for the diyas that led the community to the White House, a home that belongs to everyone. Vice President Kamala Harris echoed these sentiments, stating that the White House is the people's house where every American can celebrate their honour and tradition.
The Diwali reception saw the presence of numerous Indian Americans from the Biden administration, including Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris stated that the Biden administration joins over 1 billion people worldwide to light the 'Diya' and celebrate the victory of good over evil, knowledge over ignorance, and light over darkness.
Diwali, also known as the "festival of lights," is observed continuously for 5 days that start in late Ashwin and end in the early Kartika month according to the lunisolar Hindu calendar. The festival is celebrated with lights, firecrackers, traditional sweets, and gift exchanges.
President Biden closed his speech by wishing all those observing Diwali to enjoy the opportunity to celebrate and connect, to feel the pride of the community, and to remember the power in the event of light. He stated that South Asian Americans reflect the soul of America, whether helping the nation rise stronger from the pandemic, building an economy that works for everyone, or serving and protecting communities.
This historic Diwali function at the White House marks a significant step in recognising and celebrating the rich cultural diversity of the United States.
