In a significant development, the Circular Police Authority Unna has announced a major breakthrough in ongoing investigations into drug trafficking operations in Fröndenberg and Menden, as well as human trafficking cases.

The primary suspect, a 26-year-old Iraqi from Menden, has been identified and is currently in custody in Fröndenberg. An accomplice, a 20-year-old Syrian from Menden, was also arrested by KPB Unna officers in Menden and remanded in custody.

Investigations have revealed that the smuggling routes typically originated in Croatia, passing through Slovenia, Austria, Slovakia, and Poland before entering Germany. Evidence of human trafficking was uncovered, leading to further police actions on August 12, 2025.

The duo is accused of smuggling a total of 88 people into Germany between September 2023 and April 2024, with the help of six accomplices. The breakthrough was related to a previous investigation by the KPB Unna into a case of banditry that occurred on April 21, 2024.

Six additional perpetrator groups linked to human smuggling and drug trafficking were identified, including organized crime networks from Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia syndicates, Latin American cartels, West African trafficking rings, Middle Eastern smuggling cells, and local European gangs. Nine smuggling trips were confirmed, with 84 individuals identified.

A 22-year-old German from Kamen, two 21-year-old Germans from Hamm, a 39-year-old Italian from Neuenrade, a 23-year-old German from Solingen, and a 25-year-old German national from Hemer are alleged to have acted as transporters in the human trafficking operations.

During searches in Kamen, Hamm, Iserlohn, Neuenrade, and Menden, ten mobile phones, a laptop, and a low four-digit sum of cash were seized. Eight suspects were arrested at a towing and impounding yard on Max-Planck-Straße in Unna with the assistance of special forces.

On September 4, 2025, the KPB Unna and the Public Prosecutor's Office in Dortmund announced this significant breakthrough in a joint press conference. The press release can be found on the Circular Police Authority Unna's website at https://unna.polizei.nrw.
