Karlsruhe city authority approves hosting the World Games in 2029
World Games 2029 Set for Karlsruhe
After a competitive bidding process, the city of Karlsruhe has been selected as the host for the World Games 2029. The decision was made with a significant majority, as 25 yes votes were cast, 16 votes were against, and 3 abstentions.
The World Games, a multi-sport event that takes place every four years, following the Olympic Summer Games, will attract around 5,000 athletes and countless spectators to Karlsruhe. Over 200 medal events are expected, with competitions in non-Olympic sports such as bowling, tug of war, rugby, cheerleading, and squash.
The total costs of the World Games in Karlsruhe are estimated to be around 120 million euros, up from the initial estimate of 100 million euros. The city's contribution to the event is expected to be around 22.62 million euros between 2025 and 2030.
However, a federal funding commitment of 55 million euros for the World Games in Karlsruhe is still pending. The passage of the 2025 federal budget and the resolving of the collapse of the traffic light coalition are influencing the federal funding commitment. The federal government has not yet confirmed its funding commitment for the World Games 2029 in Karlsruhe by November 2025; despite a budget proposal including a 55 million euro federal subsidy, the final approval is still pending due to government restructuring and ongoing negotiations.
State support of 33 million euros for the World Games in Karlsruhe is also dependent on the federal funding commitment. The city council of Karlsruhe has voted in favor of hosting the World Games 2029, but the event will only take place if funding commitments from the federal and state governments are secured.
The World Games are more than just a sporting event. They aim to bring more attention to lesser-known sports and have a lasting impact on the city's image. The World Games 2029 in Karlsruhe are expected to permanently shape the city as a vibrant and inclusive place.
It is hoped that the World Games 2029 will be a significant milestone for Karlsruhe, marking the second time the city will host the World Games, after 1989. The event is expected to attract international attention and boost the city's economy and reputation. The countdown to the World Games 2029 has begun, and the anticipation is building as the city prepares for this exciting event.
