Kazakhstan Dismisses Bogus Reports Regarding Lockup of Foreign Minister

In a joint statement, the Kazakh Minister of Culture and Information, Aida Balayeva, and the spokesperson for the Kazakh Foreign Ministry, Aibek Smadiyarov, have denied reports about the alleged detention of several high-ranking officials of the Kazakh National Security Committee (NSC).

The denial came in response to unconfirmed claims about the detention of Kazakh officials that were spread by some official media and anonymous channels, as stated by Aida Balayeva. In her statement made on Sept. 4 on Facebook, Balayeva reminded journalists to verify information and follow professional ethics.

The NSC press service also denied local media reports regarding the detention of several senior officials, stating that the information is false. They emphasized that knowingly spreading false information is punishable under criminal law.

Balayeva's statement and the denial by Smadiyarov and the NSC press service were made in the context of the Kazakh government, emphasizing the consensus within the government on the matter. The Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Murat Nurtleu, is not detained, as confirmed by Balayeva.

Dissemination of false information entails administrative and criminal liability, according to Balayeva, who also emphasized the need to uphold the presumption of innocence. This joint denial serves as a reminder to the media and the public to exercise caution and responsibility in the dissemination of news.
