Kevin Stefanski discusses his dialogue with Shedeur Sanders, explaining the rationale behind the Browns selecting Tyler Huntley in a quick timeframe.
Cleveland Browns: Stefanski Addresses Offensive Struggles and QB Decision
In a post-game press conference, Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski acknowledged that the team's offense struggled in the second half of their preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams. Stefanski stated, "We didn't play great in the second half, and there are definitely areas we can improve."
Despite Joe Flacco being designated as the Week 1 starter, it was Tyler Huntley who got the last drive of the game. Huntley led the Browns on a game-winning drive, capping off the drive with a 15-yard touchdown heave to rookie tight end Harold Fannin.
Shedeur Sanders, who was benched late in the fourth quarter against the Rams, didn't have an opportunity to carry over momentum from the preseason opener due to an oblique strain he sustained during practice before the Browns' second preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Sanders finished 3-of-6 for 14 yards in the game against the Rams, marking his first action since his preseason debut earlier this month.
Sanders asked for his helmet from a teammate before Huntley trotted toward the huddle, but Stefanski said it was nothing. Sanders also reportedly said something to Stefanski on the sideline after being benched, but the coach downplayed the incident.
The Browns offense came up empty over five possessions in the second half, including four three-and-outs and five sacks. Stefanski commented, "We need to be more consistent and find ways to move the ball."
Tuesday is the NFL's deadline for the 53-man roster, and the Browns have a decision to make between Shedeur Sanders and offseason signing Kenny Pickett, who was limited by a hamstring injury. It's worth noting that Pickett is not on the Cleveland Browns' 53-man roster for the 2022 NFL season; he was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders, while Sanders is also not listed on the Browns' final roster.
In Saturday's finale, Flacco completed 9 out of 10 pass attempts for 71 yards and a touchdown. Huntley's performance, however, may have given the Browns something to think about as they finalise their roster ahead of the regular season.
