Kleve's Oktoberfest poster under fire: Green Party demands ban due to alleged sexism

The city council of Kleve, North Rhine-Westphalia, is considering a proposed ban on sexist, discriminatory, and racist outdoor advertising, following a controversy over an advertising poster for SV Donsbruggen's Oktoberfest.

The poster in question features a woman in a traditional German outfit, holding a mug of beer. Some perceive the depiction as promoting a stereotypical gender role, sparking a debate about the portrayal of women in advertising and the promotion of gender stereotypes.

Green council member Ulrike Wäckers finds the poster problematic due to the female figure's feminine features and girlish appearance. She accuses the poster of being sexist, as it reduces the female figure to her appearance and physical characteristics. Wäckers believes that such portrayals are contrary to equal rights.

The proposed regulation aims to prevent sexist, discriminatory, and racist depictions in public advertising. Advertising posters should not "exclude" or "degrade" people, according to the proposal. The Greens are planning to add a paragraph titled "Fair and discrimination-free advertising in public spaces" to the special use regulations.

Representatives of sports club SV Donsbruggen are puzzled by the criticism of their Oktoberfest poster. They have other pressing issues to address, according to their statement. Unknown individuals have covered the décolletage of the woman on the controversial poster with a sticker reading "Sexist crap."

The decision regarding the new regulation is scheduled for early October. The city council is still considering the proposed ban on certain types of advertising. If approved, the ban would aim to prevent such depictions in public spaces. The city council of Kleve is considering the implementation of the proposed regulations in the future.
