Konstanz University Announces Appointment of Tobias Heckenkamp as Chief Military Officer and Leader
New Leadership at Konstanz Fire Department
Tobias Heckenkamp has been appointed as the new head of the Konstanz Fire Department and commander, effective from August 1, 2025. The city council made the decision on July 24, 2025, with Heckenkamp succeeding Bernd Roth, who is retiring on June 30, 2025.
Heckenkamp began his career in the fire service in 1994 with the youth fire brigade. After joining the voluntary fire brigade and then the professional fire brigade in Münster in 2001, he held various positions in the fire and rescue service, including in the training department, watch leadership, and the operations and situation center.
In Konstanz, Heckenkamp most recently served as watch leader of the professional fire brigade with around 42 officials and firefighting technicians. As the head of the Konstanz Fire Department, he will be responsible for the strategic leadership and organization of the department.
Heckenkamp will oversee the leadership of approximately 250 operational personnel, who are distributed across seven locations in the city area. The operational personnel include members of the voluntary fire brigade, youth fire brigade, marching band, and senior department.
He will ensure the operational readiness of the Konstanz Fire Department, ensuring that the department is prepared to respond to emergencies effectively and efficiently. The official handover of office for Tobias Heckenkamp will take place on August 1, 2025.
