American cyclist Kristen Faulkner, the US Pro Road National Champion and two-time Olympic gold medallist, has announced the end of her 2023 racing season due to a series of setbacks.
Last December, Faulkner sustained a concussion in a training crash. This incident forced her to turn down her position on USA Cycling's team for the UCI Road World Championships in Rwanda, scheduled for this year. Chloe Dygert and Ruth Edwards will represent the USA in the elite women's road race at the event.
Faulkner underwent cartilage repair surgery in an effort to prevent future pain and instability, but the procedure was not related to the injuries sustained from the training crash last December or the shoulder surgery she had to undergo earlier.
Despite these challenges, Faulkner remains optimistic about the coming year. She has shared that she will be healthy and fully recovered going into the next season, following a six-week rehabilitation period.
The decision for the surgery was made after consulting with USA Cycling and orthopedic doctors in America. Faulkner has confirmed that the surgery was successful, and she will have a normal timeline for the start of the next season.
It's worth noting that only two of the six open positions for the elite women's road race for the USA Cycling team in Rwanda have been filled. With Faulkner's absence, the team will be looking to other talented cyclists to fill the remaining spots.
As for Faulkner's future participation in the UCI Road World Championships after 2022, no details are currently available. However, the US road race champion has expressed her eagerness to return to competition once she's fully recovered.
