Kubicki contends that the housing restriction is unlawful

In a recent interview with "Bild," Bundestag Vice-President Wolfgang Kubicki (FDP) expressed his view that the current travel restrictions and accommodation bans for travelers within Germany are unconstitutional. This contrasts with the stance of Lower Saxony's Minister-President, Stephan Weil (SPD), who defends the accommodation ban in his state.

Weil, who has served as Lower Saxony's Minister-President until May 2025, stated that the accommodation ban was implemented as a response to other states providing similar measures. He asserted that there is no cause for alarmism and that Lower Saxony aimed to avoid becoming an attraction for people from particularly affected areas.

On the other hand, Hamburg's First Mayor, Peter Tschentscher (SPD), considers an accommodation ban to be "little effective." In his responses to media outlets "Bild" and Funke media group newspapers, Tschentscher expressed his belief that the measures are neither proportional nor suitable.

Kubicki's statements suggest that he expects the travel restrictions to be lifted soon. He believes that the measures are not justified by the increase in infection numbers and that the restriction of fundamental rights will not be maintained for long.

Stephan Weil and Peter Tschentscher, political leaders from different German states, hold different opinions on the effectiveness of the accommodation ban. While Weil maintains that it is necessary, Tschentscher believes it to be ineffective. Kubicki's statements indicate that he believes the travel restrictions are not justified by the increase in infection numbers and are unconstitutional.

In the corona crisis, Lower Saxony continues to strive for a "mixture of restraint and consistency." Despite the ongoing debate about travel restrictions, the state continues to focus on digitalization efforts to improve administrative services and infrastructure.

As the situation evolves, it remains to be seen how these differing opinions will impact the future of travel restrictions within Germany.
