Labor deficiency amidst digitalization: Alleviating burdens for the hospitality sector

The Lieblingsplatz Hotel Group, founded by Niels Battenfeld in 2013, has expanded its portfolio with the opening of a new hotel - the Surf Rescue Club - located in Dune Park, Grömitz, in the Hamburg metropolitan region.

Battenfeld, who has a background in the classic hotel industry, having worked with Marriott and A-Rosa, is venturing into controversial territory with his automation approaches in the hospitality industry. The Surf Rescue Club is no exception, as it has implemented innovative kitchen technology to enhance its services.

The kitchen at the Surf Rescue Club is equipped with a cooking robot from Moley Robotics, a new manufacturer in the field. This robot supports human employees, not replacing them, in catering for the restaurant, producing for the surroundings, and stocking a delivery service.

Young and young-at-heart people are quickly adapting to these innovations, as evidenced by the well-received test operation of the automated kitchen. The pizza vending machine, another novelty in the Surf Rescue Club, prepares crispy pizzas in just four minutes. The ingredients are automatically dispensed and heated in two pizza ovens. The pizza is made with high-quality ingredients from Gia, a family-owned manufacturer from Berlin.

The Lieblingsplatz Hotel Group's website for the Surf Rescue Club is rescue-club.de, and the main website is lieblingsplatz-hotels.de. The Surf Rescue Club officially opened its doors in August 2023.

The Lieblingsplatz Hotel Group operates 12 locations in Germany and Austria, including its first hotel, "Lieblingsplatz, mein Strandhotel" in Sankt Peter-Ording. Battenfeld continues to experiment with digitalization and AI in his hotels, pushing the boundaries of the traditional hospitality industry.

However, the controversy surrounding Battenfeld's automation approaches remains unclear, as no new facts were provided in this context. Nonetheless, the Surf Rescue Club stands as a testament to Battenfeld's vision for the future of hospitality.
