Labor Dispute Escalates: Federal Government Appeals for Calm During Ministerial Talks with NUPENG Union
In a significant development, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, led a meeting between the federal government, the Dangote Group, and the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on Monday. The meeting, initially scheduled for 10:00 am, did not commence until 5:22 pm.
The discussions were aimed at resolving a union recognition crisis at the Dangote Group, with NUPENG insisting that no oil worker should be employed without union representation. The dispute revolves around the Dangote Group's policy against allowing its employees to join trade unions.
The meeting, considered crucial for the oil industry and the country's economy, was attended by Dangote Group's representatives who were expected to assist in resolving the issues. NUPENG's representatives were led by its President, Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Olawale Afolabi.
In his opening remarks, Dingyadi emphasised the importance of the oil industry to the operation and survival of the entire economy. He urged all stakeholders to embrace peace before the meeting began, expressing confidence that all issues would be resolved amicably.
Dingyadi further appealed for a listening ear and readiness to contribute to the deliberation on the matter, stating that the issues being discussed are critical to the peace and stability of the country. The parties involved in the meeting believe they can settle and resolve the issues.
The federal government had previously announced the establishment of a tripartite committee including representatives from the government, Dangote Group, and labor unions to address this issue. This committee was announced by the government under President Tinubu on September 15, 2025.
All parties are urged to maintain peace and be accommodating during the meeting. The hope is that this meeting will lead to a resolution that benefits all parties involved, ensuring the continued operation of the oil industry and the stability of the economy.
