Lamborghini Pushes Hard for an Electric-Driven Future
In a bold move towards a greener future, luxury supercar manufacturer Lamborghini has unveiled a comprehensive electrification plan. The Italian automaker aims to reduce its carbon emissions by half by 2025, a significant stride in the global trend towards electrification.
Stephan Winkelmann, the CEO of Lamborghini, has emphasised the necessity of this plan in a radically changing world. The company has announced an investment of 1.5 billion euros ($1.8 billion) in this venture, marking the largest ever made by Lamborghini.
The electrification journey for Lamborghini begins with the release of a battery-only model in the second half of the decade. However, the company is not starting from scratch. Its first foray into electrification, the Sian supercar, was unveiled in 2019. The Sian, meaning "lightning" in Bolognese dialect, cost over 3 million euros and only about 60 were built. This supercar, with its impressive acceleration from 0 to 62mph in less than 2.8 seconds, showcases Lamborghini's potential in the electrified realm.
Looking ahead, all Lamborghini models will be "electrified" by the end of 2024. The first hybrid series production car is set to be available in 2023. Despite the challenges posed by the global trend towards electrification, Lamborghini, like its high-speed vehicles, is accelerating towards this future.
The coronavirus crisis in Italy last year caused a temporary halt in production, but Lamborghini's well-heeled customers helped the company to record profit in 2020. The luxury carmaker sold 7,430 cars last year, a decrease from its record of 8,205 vehicles in 2019.
While the details about the individuals involved in the future development of electrified Lamborghini models remain undisclosed, one thing is certain: Lamborghini is gearing up for an electrifying future.
