Baden-Württemberg Embraces the Future with Games BW Funding
The gaming industry is a leading force in the current media landscape and a key driver of innovation for the digital economy. Recognising this, the state of Baden-Württemberg is investing heavily in the sector, providing €1.2 million for game funding in 2025 as part of "Games BW".
This funding aims to foster a healthy and sustainable games ecosystem, contributing to a diverse and innovative creative economy. Since 2020, Games BW has been supporting video and digital games in Baden-Württemberg.
The Baden-Württemberg Film and Media Foundation (MFG) offers financial funding, training, start-up programmes, networking, and mediation offers for the gaming industry under the label Games BW. This funding strategy is aimed at specifically promoting the innovative capability of the gaming industry as a future sector.
Nine game developers and studios from Baden-Württemberg benefited from the Games BW funding programme in 2025. At the Gamescom in Cologne, these studios showcased their latest games and developments, including four newly supported indie studios at the Indie Arena Booth. This presentation took place under the joint initiative of MFG Baden-Württemberg and Baden-Württemberg International at the state's booth in Hall 4.1, Stand C64.
The Games BW Funding is funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor and Tourism Baden-Württemberg. The funding supports innovations in the field of games and gamification, with the aim of retaining game developers in the state, promoting the founding of new game studios, and attracting game studios from within and outside the country to settle in Baden-Württemberg through attractive funding conditions.
The software/gaming industry in Baden-Württemberg is the largest sub-market of the cultural and creative economy, with a turnover volume of around €16.57 billion and a growth of around twelve percent compared to the previous year. The state is focusing on the topic "Games & Virtual Worlds Made in Baden-Württemberg" at the Gamescom trade fair.
Virtual worlds open up new possibilities for interactive gaming experiences, social networking, and innovative business models. The Games BW Funding also aims to strengthen the digital audiovisual sector and the production and development location of games in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, and Europe.
The next deadline for project applications is August 31, 2025. All necessary information and application forms can be found on the MFG Website. With around 150 companies with over 1,400 employees active in the Baden-Württemberg gaming industry, the state is clearly committed to its future in the gaming world.
For the first time, outstanding indie games from the region are being presented at the Indie Arena Booth in the public area of Gamescom. Nine prominent Baden-Württemberg game studios are also presenting their latest games and developments at the Business Area of Gamescom. The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor and Tourism, Media Library provides downloadable images for media use.
The state of Baden-Württemberg is dedicating itself to the games industry, positioning itself as a hub for innovation and creativity in the digital economy.
