Language and Cultural Exchange Hub Empowered by Kim-Sprachcafé
The KIM Language Café, located at Mitmach.RAUM (Marktstraße 2a), is a welcoming space for individuals seeking to enhance their language skills or consolidate their current knowledge. Organized by Hares Kohestani, a Germanist and employee of the Municipal Integration Management, this weekly event takes place every Wednesday from 4:30 PM to 6 PM.
The Language Café does not follow a fixed curriculum, allowing for flexibility in responding to participants' needs. This approach has proven beneficial, with two regular participants recently obtaining an A2 language certificate from different providers, crediting their progress to the Language Café.
Participants can seek support for questions about daily life and administration, making the Language Café an invaluable resource for newcomers navigating the intricacies of German culture and bureaucracy. The Language Café also serves as a supportive environment for practicing German and fostering everyday exchange.
Kohestani emphasizes that language acquisition involves more than just learning grammar and vocabulary, and the social aspect should be utilized. He quotes philosopher Xunzi, saying, "Learning is like rowing against the current. Once you stop, you drift back."
The Language Café offers a chance to improve language skills without the pressure of exams, making it an appealing option for many. The mother of two children, a regular participant, is gradually gaining confidence to speak German in a familiar setting. Her children, also regular participants, often have very good language skills, benefiting their parents in their language learning journey.
The goal of the Language Café, according to Kohestani, is to accompany participants further in maintaining their language skills, fostering cultural exchange, and supporting them in their language learning journey. The Language Café has a close connection to the advisory services of the Municipal Integration Management, providing participants with comprehensive support.
The Language Café is funded by the Ministry for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Flight and Integration of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (MKJFGFI) and from funds of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) of the European Union.
On August 28, 2025, the Language Café will be held at its usual location, Mitmach.RAUM. Whether you're a beginner or an intermediate language learner, the KIM Language Café is an excellent opportunity to practice your German, learn from others, and immerse yourself in the local culture.
