Large-scale air attacks by Russia cause a government building to catch fire in Kyiv, marking one of the war's most significant assaults.

In a troubling escalation of Russia's air campaign, the city of Kyiv has suffered a devastating attack. Until now, government buildings in the city centre have remained untouched.

The assault, which marked the second mass drone and missile attack on Kyiv within two weeks, saw the Russian military employ aviation, drones, missiles, and artillery to strike military-industrial targets across Ukraine. Among the targets were drone assembly and storage sites, military airfields, two air defence radar stations, and troop positions.

The attack on Kyiv resulted in at least two deaths and 20 injuries, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko. Two civilian casualties were confirmed: a mother and her 3-month-old child. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the head of Kyiv's city administration, Tymur Tkachenko, expressed their condolences and offered their support to the bereaved families.

The cabinet of ministers building in Kyiv was damaged during the attack, with hits recorded on the roof and upper floors. Moreover, Russian drones struck two residential buildings in Kyiv, causing direct hits. A nine-story building in Sviatoshynskyi district and a four-story building in Darnytskyi district were affected.

Ukraine managed to shoot down and neutralize 747 drones and four missiles during the attack. Despite the damage, the Ukrainian government vowed to restore the damaged buildings. However, they emphasised that the lost lives cannot be returned.

As the hopes for peace talks wane, international leaders have urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war. In response, 26 of Ukraine's allies pledged to deploy troops as a "reassurance force" for Ukraine once the fighting ends.

In a bid to end the conflict, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed his readiness to meet Putin to negotiate a peace agreement. He has also urged U.S. President Donald Trump to impose punishing sanctions on Russia to push it to end the war. Trump, in turn, initiated diplomatic talks with Putin regarding ending the war and planned meetings with European leaders to discuss the conflict.

As the situation unfolds, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for a peaceful resolution to this ongoing conflict.
