Last Moments with the Mini-Hippo, Toni, Transfixed Audiences
In a heartwarming farewell, the popular dwarf hippo Toni said goodbye to the Berlin Zoo last week, as it prepared to embark on a new journey to Mulhouse in France. Toni, an internet sensation and public favourite, has been a source of joy and fascination for many, ever since videos of its birth on June 3, 2024, went viral.
As Toni's moving day to its new home remains unknown, the zoo in Berlin organised a special programme for Toni daily at 1:30 PM during its last week. The "Hippo Bay" was exceptionally crowded, with up to 100 people gathering before 1:30 PM, eager to catch a glimpse of the beloved hippo.
Visitors from far and wide flocked to witness Toni's last appearance in Berlin. A fan even travelled all the way from Prague to be part of the special occasion. The zoo spokesperson reported an unexpected turnout for Toni's final appearances in Berlin, with the Instagram community growing from 125,000 to over 254,000 people worldwide since Toni's birth.
Footballer Antonio Rüdiger became the namesake of Toni and took on an honorary patronage. More than 20,000 name suggestions from around the world were received for Toni. During its last days at the Berlin Zoo, Toni was given a shower with a water hose or extra peanuts, treats that brought a smile to its adoring fans.
Toni's popularity has helped draw attention to a less-spotted hippo species, raising awareness and encouraging conservation efforts. Individual posts on the zoo's Instagram account reached millions in terms of reach, such as during the name call and the 2024 year in review.
As Toni prepares for its new life in Mulhouse, it is hoped that one day, Toni will contribute to its own offspring, continuing the legacy of this internet-famous hippo. The world eagerly awaits updates on Toni's new adventures in France.
