Late-season mushroom foraging

The mushroom season is currently in full swing, and for those interested in the fascinating world of fungi, there's no better place to be than at the "Wonder World of Mushrooms" event taking place on September 6th and 7th, 2025, at the Garden Show Freudenstadt / Baiersbronn.

Organised by the Stuttgart Mushroom Friends e.V., the second-largest mycological association in Germany, this event promises to be a delight for mushroom enthusiasts. The association, along with the Stuttgart Mushroom Friends e.V., will present a selection of fresh mushrooms from the local forest, providing exclusive insights into the fascinating universe of mushrooms.

The "Wonder World of Mushrooms" event will take place at the State Forest Administration's pavilion, where visitors can learn about various mushroom species and safe collection methods from forestry offices. The freshness of mushrooms can be determined by a simple smell test, and this event offers an opportunity to learn about this and much more.

Minister of Food, Rural Affairs, and Consumer Protection, Peter Hauk, has emphasised the importance of this event, highlighting the Ministry's Forest Code. The rain in August has contributed to the growth of mushroom delicacies in forests, making this year's event even more exciting.

Autumn will bring more mushroom varieties like the webcap or the honey fungus, adding to the diversity of mushrooms that can be found in the forests of the southwest. Chanterelles, porcini, and morels are just a few examples of the mushroom delicacies that can be found in these forests.

For those unsure if their collected mushrooms are edible, it is advisable to consult a mushroom expert. The German Society for Mycology e.V. can help find mushroom experts in your area. It is also important to remember that only small amounts of mushrooms can be taken for personal consumption according to the Forestry Act of Baden-Württemberg.

University Hospital Freiburg provides first aid for mushroom poisoning, so it's essential to be aware of the potential risks associated with consuming wild mushrooms. By following these guidelines and attending events like the "Wonder World of Mushrooms," mushroom lovers can enjoy the benefits of this nutritious and delicious food source while reducing food waste by preventing uneaten mushrooms from being thrown away at home.

For more information about the event or for any queries related to the Ministry of Food, Rural Affairs, and Consumer Protection, please contact the Press Office or the Citizens' Representative at the Ministry. Mushroom schools, associations, clubs, and adult education centres also provide guided hikes and seminars for those interested in learning more about the fascinating world of mushrooms.
