Law enforcement intercepts inebriated electric scooter riders
In the small town of Kleinostheim, a 23-year-old man finds himself in hot water following a traffic incident involving an e-scooter. The young man, who was previously arrested for driving under the influence (DUI), is now facing a criminal investigation.
The incident occurred on a busy street, Kasernenstraße, where the man was riding an e-scooter on the sidewalk, going in the same direction as the traffic flow. Contrary to traffic regulations, he ignored a red light, causing concern for the safety of other road users.
As he approached the intersection of Kasernenstraße and Benrather Straße, he stopped at the traffic light. However, it was not just the traffic signal that caught his attention. A policewoman and policeman, on their way to their early shift, noticed a clear "whiff" of alcohol on his breath.
The officers, suspecting the man was under the influence, decided to conduct a series of tests. The man had trouble parking the e-scooter, and when they approached him, they noted that he had difficulty responding and was noticeably unsteady.
A breathalyzer test confirmed their suspicions, revealing a blood alcohol level above one per mille, the legal limit in Germany. To further confirm the results, a blood sample was taken from the man.
The 23-year-old man from Kleinostheim was stopped and will likely face charges for driving under the influence while using an e-scooter. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible behaviour on our roads, regardless of the mode of transport.
