Buford Pusser gained legendary status by avenging his wife's murderers, yet fresh evidence implies that he was the one responsible for her demise.

Law enforcer Buford Pusser, once famed for avenging his wife's death, faces renewed scrutiny as fresh evidence implicates him in the murder of his spouse.

In a recent reexamination of the case, medical examiner Dr. Michael Revelle has cast doubt on the original findings concerning the death of Sheriff Buford Pusser's wife, Pauline Mullins Pusser.

The new evidence suggests that the gunshot wound on Buford Pusser's cheek, which he claimed was from the same incident that took his wife's life, was likely self-inflicted. This conclusion is supported by the fact that the wound was a close-contact one.

The examination also revealed that Pauline's broken nose, which had healed prior to her death, is indicative of domestic abuse. This finding, coupled with the knowledge that the marriage between Buford and Pauline was not a happy one, has led Revelle to determine that Pauline was more likely than not shot outside the car, then placed inside.

This theory is further supported by the discrepancy between the cranial trauma Pauline suffered and the crime scene photographs of the car's interior. The blood spatter on the hood of the car, outside the car, also doesn't align with Buford's statements about Pauline being shot in the vehicle next to him.

These findings have led Mark Davidson, a legal expert, to believe that there is sufficient evidence for prosecutors to present an indictment to a grand jury for the killing of Pauline Mullins Pusser.

It's important to note that this case is not about tearing down a legend, but about giving dignity and closure to Pauline and her family. It's about ensuring that the truth is not buried with time, and that justice is served, even if it's late.

While Buford Pusser was never formally charged or convicted in connection with Pauline's murder, the new evidence suggests a disturbing narrative - one of domestic abuse, murder, and manipulation of public perception to portray Buford as a vengeful hero.

This reexamination of the case serves as a reminder that the pursuit of truth is a fundamental aspect of justice, and that no matter how much time passes, the truth should never be allowed to fade.
