One notable bill from Senate President Ron Kouchi is slated to create the Hawaii Lottery and Gaming Corporation. This entity will oversee gaming activities such as state lotteries, online casino games, and poker. This move comes at a time when many groups nationwide are questioning the ethics of the sweepstakes gaming sector.
However, it's worth noting that attempts in the past to broaden gambling have faced strong opposition due to concerns about the subsequent increase in crime rates and addiction. Despite these concerns, the ongoing efforts to change Hawaii's gambling laws have raised optimism. Advocates argue that the economic benefits and the potential to recapture revenue currently lost to other states or offshore operators could prove persuasive. Yet, the debate about the potential downsides of expanded gambling persists.
