Lawmakers in Washington are filing a lawsuit against the National Guard.
The District of Columbia has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, alleging that the government acted unlawfully by placing the police in Washington under federal control and deploying the National Guard.
In a statement posted on the X platform, Brian Schwalb, the Attorney General of the District of Columbia, described the deployment as a "forced military occupation." Schwalb argues that military units like the National Guard are not permitted to perform police duties such as arrests within the US, as per current law.
This is not the first lawsuit initiated by the District of Columbia. Earlier this month, the Attorney General of the District of Columbia, along with the Democratic Party, filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration.
The current lawsuit is regarding the controversial deployment of National Guard troops in the US capital. The lawsuit also argues that the government abused its powers in this action.
Interestingly, a judge in California recently reached the same conclusion regarding the deployment of military units like the National Guard performing police duties.
Trump announced a few days earlier that he would deploy the National Guard and place the city's police under federal control due to alleged rampant crime in Washington.
The lawsuit comes as the District of Columbia continues to grapple with the ongoing pandemic and associated economic challenges. The District of Columbia, which does not have votes in Congress, has been seeking greater autonomy and self-governance for years.
The Democratic Party stands behind Schwalb in this legal battle. The party has been vocal in its criticism of the Trump administration's handling of the pandemic and its response to the ongoing protests in Washington.
As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen how the courts will rule on this contentious issue. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
