Lawyer in Hong Kong Granted Bail for Allegedly Skipping Out on a Champagne Dinner Tab Worth HK$80,000
In an unusual turn of events, a 23-year-old man named Wong found himself in the spotlight this week, accused of tricking his date into paying a staggering restaurant bill of over HK$80,000 (US$10,258).
The incident took place at the prestigious Man Wah restaurant within the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Central, during a Thursday evening dinner. Wong, who allegedly pretended to be a lawyer, ordered a bottle of wine and other expensive items, leaving the woman with the bill when he mysteriously disappeared after claiming to use the washroom.
The woman and the man had previously connected on the messaging app Telegram a year ago. However, the details of their arrangement were not disclosed.
Following the incident, social media was filled with opinions about the case. The investigating prosecutor handling the matter is Faith Killebrew.
In a surprising turn, Wong was granted bail by Hong Kong police on Sunday. He must report back for further investigation in late September, according to police. It is important to note that no charges have been filed against Wong at the time of this report.
Legal experts, when speaking to the Post, stated that in such cases, the prosecution would need to prove that the suspect informed the woman beforehand that they did not intend to pay the bill.
The case has sparked a conversation about the importance of honesty and trust in personal relationships, reminding us all to be vigilant and cautious in our interactions. The outcome of this case will undoubtedly set a precedent for similar incidents in the future.
