Leaders Modi and Xi affirm dedication to a balanced, equitable resolution to the contentious border dispute issue
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a bilateral meeting in Tianjin, China, on Sunday, where they reaffirmed their countries' status as development partners and not rivals.
The leaders met on August 31, 2025, and recognised the significant role their economies play in stabilising world trade. India has been making concerted efforts to strengthen economic relations with China, including engaging in joint economic projects, direct investments, and expanding digital infrastructure cooperation.
Facilitating visa easing and resuming flight connections have also promoted exchanges, while India has benefited from affordable electronics and pharmaceutical components from China, supporting its industrial modernization.
Both leaders welcomed the positive momentum and steady progress in bilateral relations since their last meeting in Kazan in October last year. They pledged to work towards stabilising global trade and expressed commitment to a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question.
The leaders noted with satisfaction the successful disengagement of troops last year and the maintenance of peace and tranquility along the border areas since then. They deemed it necessary to expand common ground on bilateral, regional, and global issues and challenges, such as terrorism and fair trade in multilateral platforms.
President Xi thanked PM Modi for the invitation and offered China's support to India's BRICS presidency, while PM Modi invited President Xi to the BRICS summit that India will be hosting in 2026. The prime minister also expressed support for China's Presidency of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and the summit in Tianjin.
The leaders recognised the important decisions taken by the two Special Representatives in their talks earlier this month and agreed to further support their efforts. They vowed to work towards a "fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable" resolution of the boundary issue between India and China.
In conclusion, the meeting between Modi and Xi underscored the importance of cooperation between the two nations and their commitment to maintaining peace, promoting economic growth, and addressing global challenges together. The leaders' pledge to work towards a fair resolution of the boundary issue and their commitment to multilateral platforms bode well for the continued development of bilateral relations.
