Modi and Xi Hold Bilateral Talks at SCO Summit in Tianjin
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held bilateral talks in Tianjin on Sunday, marking a significant moment in the strained relations between the two nations. The talks took place amid a global tariff tussle and strained ties between India and China.
The discussions focused on improving bilateral relations following tensions caused by the 2020 border clash, enhancing military coordination, and managing the impact of U.S. trade conflicts with major economies. The aim was to ease border disputes, support trade normalization, and promote regional security cooperation under SCO frameworks.
Ahead of his trip, Modi stated that it is important for India and China to work together to bring stability to the world economic order. This sentiment was echoed during the talks, as both leaders emphasised the need for a stable, predictable, and amicable bilateral relationship. They believe such a relationship can have a positive impact on regional and global peace and prosperity.
Modi's meeting with Xi assumed greater significance due to the strain in ties between India and the U.S. The Prime Minister's visit to China comes less than a fortnight after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi visited India. The two sides unveiled a series of measures for a "stable, cooperative, and forward-looking" relationship between India and China following Wang's talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
The measures include joint maintenance of peace along the contested frontier, reopening border trade, and resuming direct flight services at the earliest. Modi's trip to China came after a gap of seven years.
The talks also build on prior agreements for military de-escalation and seek to stabilize economic ties amid global trade tensions involving the U.S. The interview with Japan's The Yomiuri Shimbun, published on Friday, revealed Modi's stance on the importance of India-China cooperation.
Modi's visit to China is primarily to attend the two-day annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). The talks are expected to take stock of India-China economic ties and deliberate on steps to normalize relations.
As the world grapples with economic volatility and trade tensions, Modi emphasised the need for India and China, as two major economies, to work together to bring stability to the world economic order. This sentiment was shared by Xi, as both leaders sought to reset their relations and move towards a more cooperative future.
