Leadership edge for Soler, with Vingegaard offering strong resistance
In the heart of the 80th edition of the Tour of Spain, Spanish rider Marc Soler of UAE Team Emirates secured a thrilling victory in the 14th stage. The stage ended atop the Alto de La Farrapona in Castile and León, with Soler launching a devastating attack at the foot of the day's final climb to secure his win.
Soler crossed the finish line with a time of 3h 48' 22", averaging an impressive 35.8 km/h. His closest competitors included João Almeida and Giulio Pellizzari, who finished 39 seconds behind, and Jonas Vingegaard, who was 48 seconds behind.
The stage was marked by a breakaway group that included French riders Bruno Armirail and Léo Bisiaux, as well as Soler. However, the race was incident-free despite pro-Palestinian demonstrations targeting the Israel-Premier Tech team. The Israeli-Canadian team, with only one Israeli rider, confirmed their commitment to the race, vowing to continue until the finish line on September 14.
In the general classification, Vingegaard maintains the lead, now by 48 seconds, having gained two seconds on Almeida in the bonus seconds game. Almeida, Soler's main rival, finished second in the 14th stage, maintaining his second place in the general classification.
Meanwhile, in a different part of the world, the Israeli retaliations following a Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, resulted in more than 63,000 deaths in the Gaza Strip, mostly civilians. The attack claimed 1,219 lives, the majority of whom were civilians.
Back to the world of cycling, Tom Pidcock finished the 14th stage 53 seconds behind Soler, maintaining his third place in the general classification. Jai Hindley finished 42 seconds behind Soler, while Felix Gall was 48 seconds behind. Canadian riders Pier-André Côté and Nickolas Zukowski finished 97th and 107th, respectively, 28 minutes 38 seconds behind the winner.
Soler's victory marked the seventh stage win for his UAE team in this 80th edition of the Tour of Spain. The team, created by Sylvan Adams, continues to make a strong impact in the race. The race now moves on to its next stage, with the riders preparing for the challenges that lie ahead.
