In the heart of China's capital, a significant military parade was held to mark the 80th anniversary of Japan's surrender at the end of World War II. The event, which took place in a site known for the suppression of student protests in 1989, saw the attendance of numerous world leaders, including former US President Donald Trump's alleged targets - Xi Jinping, Vladimir Putin, and Kim Jong-un.
Amidst the display of underwater drones, hypersonic missiles, laser weapons, and radar systems, Trump accused these leaders of conspiring against the USA from afar during the parade. However, Kremlin advisor Yuri Ushakov later stated that he assumes Trump's accusation was made "not without irony."
The military parade also concluded a week of diplomatic self-promotion by Chinese President Xi Jinping with his allies. During the related summit events such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meetings held nearby, Xi and Putin demonstrated their closeness and strategic partnership. The SCO, which includes China and Russia, is often used to establish a counterbalance to alliances of Western states like NATO.
The parade also highlighted the growing tensions between Western countries and China, with Western nations accusing Beijing of decisively supporting Moscow in the Ukraine conflict. EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas warned of Xi, Putin, and Kim's efforts to build an anti-Western "new world order." Kallas also stated that "whether we like it or not, Europe is in a fight for freedom."
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) agrees with India and many other countries that the international rule-based order must be defended, "including against China." Meanwhile, Putin openly threatened to continue Russian attacks in Ukraine, stating "We'll see how the situation develops. If not, then we must solve all our tasks militarily."
Other government and state leaders who participated in the military parade included Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, among more than 20 heads of state and government. Alexander Lukashenko, the Belarusian strongman, attended the parade braving temperatures up to 30 degrees Celsius.
Xi declared that the world faces a "choice between peace or war," and stated that China is "unstoppable." As international tensions rise, it seems the world is indeed at a crossroads, with the future of geopolitical alliances and the global order hanging in the balance.
