Andalusia Wildfire Update: INFOCA Issues Safety Reminders and Highlights Funding Boost
In the aftermath of the recent wildfires in Andalusia, the regional government's wildfire prevention and firefighting program, INFOCA, has issued a reminder to residents and pool owners. Helicopters battling wildfires may need to use private swimming pools as water sources until October, and obstructing this use could be considered a criminal offence.
According to INFOCA, it is crucial for residents to stay clear of the affected areas to avoid creating additional emergencies during wildfire fights. This includes avoiding getting close to take up-close pictures or attempting to record videos, as these actions could potentially jeopardise safety and potentially lead to police action.
In a statement, Antonio Sanz, the Minister of the Presidency and head of INFOCA, emphasised the importance of cooperation during wildfire emergencies. He also warned of the potential for a highly dangerous fire to start at any moment, highlighting the need for continued vigilance.
The wildfires in Andalusia have primarily affected 5,090 hectares of shrubland, with fires stabilised in record time, often within 24 hours. Andalusia has not declared Level 2 emergencies, a testament to the effective firefighting efforts.
The funding for 2025 shows a significant increase compared to previous administrations, with €257 million allocated. A significant portion of this funding (€165 million) is being used to build a new forest defence centre, nearly doubling the budget from previous administrations. €45.4 million of the funding is allocated for upgrading 75% of fire trucks.
INFOCA also stresses the importance of safety protocols. Residents are advised to remove all loose objects around pools (sunbeds, parasols, towels) to prevent them from being swept up by helicopter downdrafts.
In the 2025 summer campaign, INFOCA reported 651 interventions, with 514 classified as minor incidents and 137 escalating to wildfires. The programme's efforts have been commendable, with fires being brought under control swiftly.
As the wildfire risk continues through September and October, residents are encouraged to follow these safety guidelines to ensure the safety of all involved in the firefighting efforts.
