Lecture series commencing at the Beatrice-Strauss Centre: "Teachhouse: Exploring Jewish history in Düsseldorf"
The Memorial and Remembrance Site in Düsseldorf is set to launch a new event series called "Lehrhaus," focusing on Jewish history in the city. The first lecture in this series, titled "The Synagogue Community of Düsseldorf and its Branch Communities before World War I," will be given by Dr. Bastian Fleermann, the director of the Memorial and Remembrance Site.
The lecture, scheduled for February 19th at 6 pm, will take place at the Beatrice-Strauss-Center of the Memorial and Remembrance Site, Marktstraße 2 (in the courtyard). Admission to the event is free, and registration is not required.
The lecture will delve into the not always tension-free relationship between the urban center and the rural and small-town Judaism on the periphery. It will discuss the history of the daughter communities in Kaiserswerth, Ratingen, Benrath-Urdenbach, Gerresheim-Erkrath, and Kettwig before the bridge.
Conflicts between the urban center and these rural communities revolved around taxes, buildings, religious practices, the application of Kashrut, and general "law-abidingness." The lecture aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of these historical conflicts and the evolution of the Jewish community in Düsseldorf.
It is important to note that the Synagogue Community of Düsseldorf was founded in 1858 as a modern corporation under public law. The "Lehrhaus" series was initiated by the Synagogengemeinde Düsseldorf, and other daughter institutions before World War I included the Jewish community school, the mikveh (ritual bath), as well as charitable and social organizations affiliated with the Düsseldorf Jewish community.
The Memorial and Remembrance Site encourages all interested parties to attend the "Lehrhaus" event series. For more information about the site and its offerings, an overview can be found here. Interested parties can find the Beatrice-Strauss-Center at Marktstraße 2 (in the courtyard).
The "Lehrhaus" series is part of the Memorial and Remembrance Site's ongoing efforts to promote understanding and appreciation of Jewish history in Düsseldorf. The series aims to provide a platform for discussions and learning about the rich and complex history of the Jewish community in the city.
So, mark your calendars for February 19th and join Dr. Bastian Fleermann for an enlightening journey through the history of the Synagogue Community of Düsseldorf and its branch communities before World War I.
