Lee Corso bids an emotional adieu during his last 'College GameDay' stint at Ohio State, event carrying a unique sentimentous touch.
Lee Corso, the beloved analyst on ESPN's "College GameDay", is retiring after a remarkable career spanning over three decades. His retirement will take place before No. 3 Ohio State hosts top-ranked Texas on Saturday.
Corso's retirement day is a moment of celebration rather than emotional goodbyes. Kirk Herbstreit, who has sat next to Corso since 1996, wants to celebrate everything Corso has meant to them and to the sport, rather than be sad about his departure.
Corso's first appearance on "College GameDay" was in 1987, and his popular headgear prediction segment began outside Ohio Stadium on Oct. 5, 1996, during the Ohio State vs Penn State game. It was during this game that Corso donned Brutus Buckeye's head, a tradition that has become synonymous with his name.
The 26th appearance of GameDay in Columbus marks a full-circle moment for Corso. In fact, the current host Rece Davis, along with analysts Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard, Pat McAfee, and Nick Saban, will accompany the ESPN "College GameDay" team for Corso's final show on August 30, 2025.
Corso's retirement has been met with acclaim and send-offs since announcing his decision. He received a standing ovation before boarding his flight in Orlando, Florida, on Thursday. In July, he was also honoured at the ESPY Awards.
Despite the celebrations, Corso will have a chance to say farewell during his retirement. Rece Davis mentioned that this would be an opportunity for Corso to express his gratitude and reminisce about his time on the show.
However, the emotional goodbyes can come next week. For now, Corso is feeling great and doing great, ready to celebrate his retirement weekend with his colleagues and fans.
Corso turns 90 on Aug. 7, making his retirement a well-deserved break after a long and successful career. His absence will certainly be felt on "College GameDay", but his legacy will live on, inspiring future analysts and fans alike.
