Legendary sports figure Davey Johnson, a two-time World Series winner with the Baltimore team as a player, passed away after leading the Mets to a championship victory.

Davey Johnson, a former All-Star second baseman and a remarkable leader who transformed the New York Mets into a winning organisation, has passed away at the age of 82.

Johnson's career spanned from 1965 to 2013, including both playing and managing in the major leagues. He managed the Mets, Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Washington Nationals from 1984-2013.

His close friend and former player, Darryl Strawberry, posted a tribute on Instagram, describing Johnson's legacy as one that will be remembered for his incredible impact on the game and the lives he touched. Strawberry mentioned that Johnson had the ability to empower players to express themselves while maintaining a strong commitment to excellence.

Strawberry's Instagram post included a photo of him, Johnson, and Dwight "Doc" Gooden. Johnson won the World Series twice with the Baltimore Orioles as a player and was voted an All-Star four times, winning the Gold Glove three times during his playing career.

Johnson's wife, Susan Johnson, informed longtime Mets public relations representative Jay Horwitz of his death after a long illness. He was at a hospital in Sarasota, Florida, when he died on Friday.

The news of Johnson's death has been met with condolences from across the baseball world. Former Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo described the day as a tough one. The successor of Davey Johnson as manager of the Washington Nationals in 2013 was Matt Williams.

Meanwhile, in the WNBA, Leila Lacan led the Sun to a win over Phoenix, dealing a potential blow to Phoenix's seeding hopes.

Johnson's passing marks the end of an era for baseball, leaving behind a legacy of success and impact that will be remembered for years to come.
