Lengthy Fighting in Ukraine Spanning Over Three Years
The European Union (EU) has imposed new sanctions on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. These sanctions, which can vary greatly in their nature and intensity, aim to change the behavior of the targeted country.
The President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has been at the forefront of recent peace efforts between Ukraine and Russia. She has participated in high-level diplomatic meetings, including joining Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in talks with U.S. President Trump in Washington to discuss the conflict and peace plans. In Paris, she co-announced with France's President Macron that 26 Western countries are prepared to deploy troops to help secure a ceasefire or peace, emphasizing Europe's commitment to Ukraine's security and stabilization.
Ukraine, a country in Eastern Europe that is almost twice as large as Germany, has been in conflict with Russia over parts of its territory since 2014, including the Crimean peninsula and eastern Ukraine. The capital of Ukraine is Kyiv, and many Ukrainians speak both Ukrainian and Russian.
Ukraine was formerly part of the Soviet Union, and the EU Commission, responsible for legislation in the European Union, is located in Brussels, which is the capital of Belgium. Each country sends one person as a commissioner to the EU Commission, with each commissioner responsible for a specific topic, such as environmental protection or European security.
In response to the new sanctions, Ursula von der Leyen has promised Ukraine a new aid payment of 3.5 billion euros. Sanctions can include stopping the purchase of goods from a country or restricting entry of certain persons. The EU Commission does not control the implementation of sanctions but coordinates them across member states.
It is important to note that Russia invaded the whole of Ukraine in 2022, causing war within the country. Ukraine, despite its size, has fewer inhabitants compared to its size. The EU's actions are a clear demonstration of its support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
As the situation continues to evolve, it is crucial for all parties involved to work towards a peaceful resolution and respect international law. The EU's commitment to Ukraine remains steadfast, and it will continue to play a key role in diplomatic efforts to bring about peace.
