Leonard Smith, the given name

Leonard V. Smith, a distinguished historian and scholar, is currently engaged in researching and writing a new book at Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas. The book, set in the nineteenth century, delves into the intricate relationship between liberalism and the law in both Texas and French Algeria.

Smith, a Bill and Rita Clements Senior Fellow at the Clements Center for Southwest Studies, has an illustrious academic career. He has previously served as visiting scholar at The Ohio State University's Mershon Center, visiting professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris, William F. Podlich Distinguished Fellow at Claremont McKenna College, and Ray Moore Visiting Faculty Fellow at the Associated Kyoto Program at Doshisha University in Kyoto, Japan.

His forthcoming book is not his first solo endeavour. Smith has authored several single-author books, including "French Colonialism from the Ancien Régime to the Present" (2023), "Sovereignty at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919" (2018), "The Embattled Self" (2007), and "Between Mutiny and Obedience" (1994). His most recent publication is "The League of Nations and the Global Legal Order" in the "Cambridge History of International Law" (2025).

Smith's academic journey has also seen him awarded fellowships from prestigious institutions such as the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Humanities Center. He has also been a guest scholar at Harvard University, the University of Chicago, and the European University Institute during his career.

In addition to his forthcoming book, Smith is also the coauthor of "Ils ont fait la paix" (2018) and "France and the Great War, 1914-1918" (2003). Currently, he is on research leave.

The Clements Center for Southwest Studies, where Smith is based, is located at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. The Centre is dedicated to the study of the American West, the borderlands, and the global Southwest. It is a fitting environment for Smith's research into the history and law of Texas and French Algeria.
