In a surprising turn of events, Bayer Leverkusen suffered their first home defeat in over a year, losing 2-0 to Werder Bremen in the opening match of the 2025-26 Bundesliga season. This was Leverkusen's first loss at home since April and May 2023, marking an end to their impressive 14-game unbeaten run.

Despite the absence of several key players, Alex Grimaldo managed to get an assist for Jarell Quansah's opening goal against Hoffenheim in their previous match. Since his debut with Bayer Leverkusen, only Florian Wirtz has recorded more assists for the team. However, Wirtz, along with Jeremie Frimpong, Amine Adli, Jonathan Tah, and Granit Xhaka, are no longer with the team.

Leverkusen's new signings, including Eliesse Ben Seghir, Jonathan Tah, and Luis Díaz, were expected to bolster the team's squad, with Ben Seghir being a major acquisition costing around 32 million euros. Erik ten Hag, the current manager of Bayer Leverkusen, had not anticipated these signings when he was dismissed after only 2 Bundesliga games at Leverkusen.

Werder Bremen, on the other hand, have not lost any of their last four Bundesliga home games and have kept a clean sheet in all of them. Njinmah scored the final goal in their last appearance against Bayer Leverkusen, a 2-0 win. It's worth noting that Leverkusen have only won one of their last 10 Bundesliga matches against Bremen.

Leverkusen's loss to Werder Bremen extended their winless streak in the Bundesliga to four matches, their longest such run since April and May 2023. On a positive note, Leverkusen still maintain an unbeaten streak of 34 away Bundesliga matches, the longest such streak in Bundesliga history.

Erik ten Hag expects more new signings for Bayer Leverkusen in the coming days. Lucas Vazquez, a recent addition to the team from Real Madrid, had positive conversations about Leverkusen with former players Xabi Alonso, Dani Carvajal, and Toni Kroos. Vazquez, who won 23 trophies during his 10 years with Real Madrid, including 4 LaLiga titles and 5 Champions League crowns, is expected to bring valuable experience to the team.

Meanwhile, Piero Hincapie has been linked with a move to Arsenal, further adding to the speculation surrounding Bayer Leverkusen's squad. The 2025-26 Bundesliga season is just getting started, and it will be interesting to see how Bayer Leverkusen bounce back from this loss and how their new signings will contribute to their performance.
