Live tracking via GPS, warning system, and alternative routes are integral components of the surveillance system designed for the safety of ultra-trail runners participating in races around Mont-Blanc.
In the picturesque town of Chamonix, France, the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) is underway, attracting runners from around the world. At the heart of this event is the UTMB Mont-Blanc organisation, which oversees the race and forms the central race of the UTMB World Series each year.
The race is a gruelling test of endurance, with participants given nearly 47 hours to complete the tour of Europe's highest peak. As the runners navigate the challenging terrain, a team of 200 healthcare professionals are on hand, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all participants.
Medical Director Patrick Basset is monitoring updates from medical teams posted on the course, keeping a close eye on the runners' progress. The race control center maintains a continuous vigil, with the alert system set to lift on Sunday at 16:30, excluding post-race medical follow-up.
The software used in the operation has an alert system for specific keywords, such as 'red urine', which could indicate a serious medical issue. By 11 am on Saturday, medical teams had intervened 171 times since the morning (1,037 times since Monday) for various situations.
Prevention and education work are integral parts of the race, with efforts made before, during, and after the event to ensure the safety and health of the runners. Organisers have set up facilities in Chamonix for blood tests and X-rays, should they be required.
The new course was marked by teams within 30 minutes of the decision, ensuring the runners could navigate the course safely. However, a decision was made to avoid the Pyramides calcaires due to slippery snow conditions. This decision was made to ensure the safety of the runners, as the slippery conditions could lead to falls and injuries.
Despite these precautions, about ten people have had to be evacuated from the different races since the beginning of the week. This underscores the importance of the medical team's vigilance and the need for runners to prioritise their safety.
The Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc is a testament to human endurance and determination, but it is also a testament to the importance of safety and preparation. As the race continues, the medical team will continue to monitor the runners closely, ensuring that each participant can complete the race safely and with a sense of accomplishment.
