Live Updates from Modi-Xi SCO Meeting: Prime Minister Modi Stresses Indo-China Peace and Stability, Extends Invitation to President Xi for the 2026 BRICS Summit in India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, China, marking the first visit by Modi since 2018.

In their delegation-level talks, Modi and Xi reviewed the progress of bilateral relations since their meeting in Kazan last year. The leaders also discussed the resumption of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, the commencement of direct flights between the two countries, and the peace and stability on the borders.

However, the meeting also touched upon the challenges posed by the United States imposing tariffs on India, potentially putting India in a difficult position.

Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of upholding multilateralism, a multipolar world, and more democracy in international institutions. He also expressed the need to handle the China-India relationship from a strategic and long-term perspective, marking the 75th anniversary of China-India diplomatic relations.

Modi, in his response, noted that India and China both pursue strategic autonomy, and their relations should not be seen through a third country lens. He also expressed support for China's presidency of the SCO and invited Xi to the BRICS Summit that India will be hosting in 2026.

In a show of unity, Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin took a common stance against "discriminatory sanctions" that disturb the socioeconomic development of BRICS member countries. They reiterated that India-China economic cooperation is important for the stability of the world economy.

Prime Minister Modi held a separate meeting with Cai Qi, Secretary of the Secretariat of the Chinese Communist Party, to discuss matters of mutual interest and cooperation between India and China.

Foreign leaders attending the SCO Summit included Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Modi stated that cooperation between India and China benefits 2.8 billion people and reiterated that the relationship is crucial for global peace and prosperity. He also highlighted that the two nations should work together for peace and prosperity in Asia and around the world, echoing Xi Jinping's sentiments.

The SCO summit provided a platform for regional leaders to discuss and address various global issues, including regional security, economic cooperation, and strategic ties among member states. Russian President Putin visited the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to reinforce these discussions.

As the world grapples with economic challenges and geopolitical tensions, the meetings at the SCO summit underscored the importance of maintaining strong, cooperative relationships between nations, particularly between India and China.
