Lively Festivities and Atmosphere at Dahmen- and Holzgraven Streets

The city of Aachen is bringing new life to its inner-city district around Dahmen and Holzgraben. Over the past few months, a collaborative effort between the city, local traders, and property owners has been underway to improve the neighbourhood.

Four new offers have been supported by the city's 'Ladenliebe' funding program, which includes the addition of high-quality seating areas in the coming months. This renewal project has also seen numerous new openings, particularly on the Dahmen Graben.

A cross-departmental "task force" has been established to work on the Dahmen and Holzgraben renewal project. The coordination of the first street festival in the neighbourhood was taken over by the newly formed community of local retailers (Straßengemeinschaft der Händler*innen).

The street festival, scheduled for September 6, 2025, from 12 to 6 pm, marks the beginning of further enhancements in the Holzgraben square. The event will feature attractions for all ages, including face painting, culinary offerings, market stalls, games, and fun.

Local actors are working together with the task force to strengthen the quality of life and appeal of the neighbourhood. The 'Aachen Unverpackt' store will open its doors on the Dahmen Graben during the street festival. Colorful lanterns and a large banner on the overhead lines create a festive atmosphere, made possible by the city's 'Oecher Perlen' fund.

More greenery will be introduced to improve the quality of stay in the Holzgraben square. The city is implementing measures such as activating vacant spaces, new furniture, and promoting actions and temporary initiatives.

City manager Kai Hennes reports a significant change in the district since the first street conference in March 2025. Horst Recker, owner of "SONNENTOR" and a spokesperson for the community, has expressed optimism about the district's renewal.
