In a summer of record-breaking transfer spending, Liverpool find themselves on the brink of making history, but a potential deal for defender Marc Guehi remains uncertain.

Liverpool's current summer spending, including add-ons, stands at an impressive £417.5m with the signing of Alexander Isak pending. However, if they manage to secure Guehi, their total spending will soar to a staggering £452.5m, surpassing Chelsea's previous record of £434.5m set in 2023.

The Reds agreed a £35million deal for Guehi, but the proposed move is in doubt as Chelsea have expressed interest in signing him as a replacement, should the Liverpool deal fall through. The club agreed to sell Guehi only if they have the right replacement in place.

Manager Oliver Glasner has expressed the need to keep Guehi for a successful season, considering him a crucial player and one of their key defenders, as well as their captain. Glasner has stated that they have no chance to find a suitable replacement for Guehi in one day, and as of 31st August, they have not found one.

Meanwhile, Palace are looking for a replacement for Guehi with less than an hour to the deadline, after selling Eberechi Eze to Arsenal. Guehi completed his medical in London for a move to Liverpool, but the deal is yet to be finalised.

Liverpool are waiting for Palace to decide on whether to sanction the move for Guehi, but time is running out. If the Guehi deal goes through, Liverpool will break their own record for the most spending in a summer transfer window.

Elsewhere, Liverpool are set to sign Alexander Isak for a British record £125m. The transfer of Isak, if official, will take Liverpool's summer spending spree to a staggering £417.5m, regardless of the Guehi deal.

As the transfer deadline approaches, the race is on for Liverpool to secure Guehi and set a new record for summer spending, but the club's hopes are hanging in the balance.
