Local Administrative Body of Fokus
In the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, Detmold is making significant strides in promoting inclusivity in sports. The city has officially been designated as a focus municipality for sport and inclusion since mid-May 2025.
The cornerstone of this initiative is the ongoing "Sport inclusive" project, which commenced on July 1, 2023, and is supported by the LWL Social Foundation gGmbH. This project, run by the city portal, aims to sustainably expand the range of movement and sports offerings for people with disabilities.
At the forefront of this project is the promotion of the participation of people with disabilities in sports. This commitment extends beyond the project's lifespan, being a central concern of the Detmold sports development planning even after the project concludes.
The "Sport inclusive" project has seen the adaptation of the sports helper training to cater to the needs of people with cognitive impairments. This is just one of the many ways Detmold is ensuring that sports are accessible and inclusive for everyone.
Open sports offers such as the F.I.T. mobile, the open sports hall, and the Hermi run are now open to all, thanks to the efforts of the project. Detmold is also collaborating with Special Olympics NRW to further strengthen inclusion in sport and permanently anchor it in the city society.
The Westphalian Gymnastics Federation (Westfälischer Turnerbund e.V.) is another key partner in Detmold's mission. They are particularly focused on promoting sports for children with intellectual disabilities and linking schools and clubs in the region, including Detmold.
As a result of the project, the number of inclusive club offers in Detmold has increased to 24. For inquiries about the "Sport inclusive" project, residents can contact Daniela Lang at [email protected] or by phone at 05231 977 201. Alternatively, an open consultation hour has been set up in Detmold for information, advice, and support on inclusive sports offers and funding opportunities.
Detmold is committed to permanently anchoring inclusion in sport in the city society. Training costs for the 46 trainers specifically trained for inclusive sport in Detmold are covered by the project until April 2026. The "Sport inclusive" project continues to make a positive impact on the city, fostering a more inclusive and welcoming sports environment for all.
