Local fire stations in Covington are participating in a community effort to gather and safely dispose of lithium batteries.
Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky Residents Now Have a Safe Solution for Lithium Battery Disposal
The Cincinnati Recycling and Reuse Hub, a non-profit organization located at 911 Evans Street, Lower Price Hill, has established local fire departments as collection points for lithium batteries in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.
The partnership with the Covington Fire Department aims to provide the community with a safe and convenient way to dispose of lithium batteries. Covington Fire Stations, Company 1 and Company 5, have joined the program, with locations at 100 East Robbins and 1255 Hands Pike accepting lithium batteries, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Citizens can access the drop-off at the 100 East Robbins location via the side door on East Robbins, and at the 1255 Hands Pike location via the front door on the Hands Pike side. Parking is available at both locations in the fire station parking lot off East Robbins, and between the fire station and the park at 1255 Hands Pike.
It is important to note that the Cincinnati Recycling and Reuse Hub's public open hours do not include the days and times mentioned above. The Hub's public open hours are as follows: Tuesdays, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., Thursdays, from 12 p.m. - 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The Hub continues to collect lithium batteries for free during these hours at the 911 Evans Street facility.
The program only accepts lithium batteries, and it is crucial to remember that these batteries have a limited lifespan and should never be thrown out with regular household trash due to the risk of fire and environmental harm.
The Clean Fuels Coalition decided in 2023 to accept lithium batteries from local fire departments in Covington, establishing a collection point for the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area. The program is partially funded by Rumpke Waste and Recycling.
The Cincinnati Recycling and Reuse Hub also accepts "hard-to-recycle" and reusable items such as electronics, Styrofoam, pill bottles, plant pots, tiles, and more. For more information about battery disposal, visit the Cincinnati Recycling and Reuse Hub's website at www.cintirrh.org or the Northern KY Solid Waste Management Area Resource Guide.
The City's social media will provide further resources for battery recycling and disposal education. Lithium batteries are an essential part of our daily lives, powering devices such as smartphones, laptops, and electric vehicles. By safely disposing of these batteries, we can help protect our environment and community.
