Valencian Government Bolsters Flood Preparedness with Coordination Meetings and Training Programs

The Valencian Government is taking proactive measures to ensure the region is well-prepared for potential floods. Juan Carlos Valderrama, the Minister of Emergencies and Interior, has been at the forefront of these efforts, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and coordination among all involved parties.

Valderrama recently held a coordination meeting with more than 50 representatives from organizations involved in emergency response due to flooding. The meeting served to share all the measures adopted by the devices and administrations to be prepared for intense rains.

In addition, the Minister has sent a circular to all town halls outlining measures to adopt in case of intense rains and floods. The guide of recommendations sent to the town halls varies based on the specific situation of each municipality.

Valderrama has also announced a specific meeting of the flood zone on the flood prevention plan. He emphasized the need for training children and adolescents in emergency prevention and self-protection measures, and as a result, Valderrama will hold meetings with all Valencian universities to train students in flood prevention.

The Valencian Government will launch a program of awareness and training in educational centers and universities this month. The minister has urged continued attention, work in the area, and alertness, as even a non-intense rain can affect all the municipalities.

In an orange level, schools might need to close, cut off traffic routes, or take actions in floodable zones, according to Valderrama. At a red level, schools should be closed, but the responsibility lies with the municipality, as per Valderrama.

The minister has noted that they are still in the forest fire campaign, but the focus is shifting towards flood preparedness. Valderrama has recommended downloading the GVA112 Alerts app for timely flood alerts.

The Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces has informed municipal decision-makers about their roles in flood situations or alerts. The actions to be taken by town halls depend on the specific situation of each municipality, as per Valderrama.

The Valencian Government invites organizations including emergency services, civil protection, water management authorities, and local municipalities to coordination meetings for the flood plan. The minister has emphasized that the coordination and collaboration of all the devices framed and included within the special plan for floods is crucial.

Personal situations and infrastructural damage have been suffered in the flood area, and Valderrama has stated that shared competencies between administrations in emergencies are essential but that the citizen also needs to be trained. He has urged continued vigilance and work in the area to ensure the region is as prepared as possible for any potential floods.
