Local residents of Elgin unite in support for the former St. Edward student and current Minneapolis school principal, following a tragic school shooting incident.

In the aftermath of the devastating mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, where two children were tragically killed and 18 others were wounded, the community of St. Edward Central Catholic High School in Elgin has rallied together in support.

More than 150 letters from alumni have been gathered, expressing sentiments of admiration for Matt Deboer, the principal of Annunciation Catholic School, who is leading the school through this difficult time. Many of the letters also express support for Deboer, a graduate of St. Edward Central Catholic High School.

Several alumni reminisced about looking up to Deboer as a teenager, recalling his leadership and dedication. The current Principal of St. Edward Central Catholic High School, AnneMarie Woj-Dufelmeier, also expressed her support for Deboer and Annunciation Catholic School.

In a show of solidarity, St. Edward Central Catholic High School distributed shirts to the first 200 fans in attendance at a home football game, honouring the resilience of Matt Deboer and the Annunciation Catholic School community. Woj-Dufelmeier also plans to mail these shirts, along with the collected letters, to Minneapolis.

Woj-Dufelmeier emphasised the importance of taking action to prevent similar tragedies from happening again. She encouraged Annunciation Catholic School and the wider community in Minneapolis, stating that prayer should lead to action.

The school community in Elgin is also praying for the recovery of the community in Minneapolis following the shooting. A moment of silence and solidarity was observed from Elgin to Minneapolis, as both communities come together to support one another in these challenging times.

St. Edward Central Catholic High School also offered encouragement as a school community to Annunciation Catholic School following the shooting. The school held a moment of silence and offered support to Deboer and Annunciation Catholic School, standing with them in their time of need.

As the Annunciation Catholic School community in Minneapolis continues to heal, the support from St. Edward Central Catholic High School in Elgin serves as a reminder of the power of community and the importance of standing together in times of adversity.
